This site’s emphasis is the high desert near Grand Junction Colorado, not far from the Utah border and Moab Utah, which includes the Colorado National Monument and Black Ridge Wilderness. A special interest of ours is arches. There are, of course, well-known arches in Rattlesnake Canyon within the Black Ridge Wilderness, but there are many other less-known arches or even undocumented arches found during our exploration. Although Grand Junction is a hiker’s paradise, as we roam farther from home, we’ll share information about other hiking and backpacking areas too.

The desert and mountains near Grand Junction have a different character each season. Wild flowers are abundant in the spring. Fall is especially colorful on the “Mesa” but cool temperatures and colorful cottonwood trees make it a great time to hike in the high desert too. Rain storms create seldom-seen waterfalls. Fog rolls into the canyons changing the appearance entirely. Snowshoeing is a great way to see the mountains, and sometimes even the desert, in winter. Backpacking provides the opportunity to observe the conflict between the deep-blue sky and bright-orange sandstone at sunrise and sunset.
