Backpacking
Berger, Karen. Hiking Light Handbook. Carry Less. Enjoy More. Seattle WA: The Mountaineers Books, 2004. 171 Pages.
This book wasn't very good either.
Curtis, Rick. The Backpacker's Field Manual. A Comprehensive Guide to Mastering Backcountry Skills. New York: Three Rivers Press, 2005. 440 Pages.
This book wasn't too useful. Perhaps if I hadn't read others before it,
I would have found something useful in it's pages. You wouldn't want to carry it in your pack as a field manual.
Fletcher, Colin. and Rawlins, Chip. The Complete Walker IV. New York: Knopf, 2004. 845 pages.
It's long. It contains lots of information. It certainly isn't the best backpacking book.
Harvey, Mark. The National Outdoor Leadership School's Wilderness Guide. New York: Fireside, 1999. 268 Pages.
I don't recommend it.
Jordan, Ryan (Ed). Lightweight Backpacking and Camping. Bozeman MT: Beartooth Mountain Press, 2005. 434 Pages.
Overall, this is an excellent book. It will appeal to those with an analytical mind.
After reading many other books, I read this book and still found it expanding my backpacking knowledge.
Kestenbaum, Ryel. The Ultralight Backpacker. Camden ME: Ragged Mountain Press, 2001. 139 Pages.
It could be worse, maybe.
Ladigin, Don. Lighten Up! A Complete Handbook for Light and Ultralight Backpacking. Guilford CT: Globe Pequot Press, 2005. 99 Pages.
If you want to buy just one book on backpacking, this is it. It is concise with lots of great information.

McCartney, Bill. Travel Light - Eat Heavy. Cullman AL: The Gray House Press, 2005. 132 Pages.
This book follows a simple cooking method of boil water, hydrate food, eat. There is
no clean-up. It gives good suggestions on stoves and other preparation details. When I cook, this is also my style.
There are calories listed for each meal with advice on calories required to minimize pack weight. This is my favorite
cooking book for backpacking.

Weiss, Hall. Secrets of Warmth: Warmth For Comfort or Survival. Brooklyn NY: Vibe Publications, 1988. 190 Pages.
There is a later edition of this book. The 1988 edition is dated when it comes to the particulars of
what is available but the underlying principles stated are very useful. I found this book very interesting and informative.
